6. Acadia, Maine Score: 4.07
"The best nature has to offer on the East Coast," says one reader about Acadia. You'll find exceptional views no matter which mountain you climb, though Mount Penobscot is a must, according to a reviewer. The downsides? One person says Bar Harbor has become a "gaudy tourist trap," and crowds are a problem as well. To avoid them, reviewers say, come after August and head to the western side of the island.
7. Sequoia & Kings Canyon, California Score: 4.04
"Just as beautiful as Yosemite, but without the crowds," is the general sentiment of those who reviewed
Sequoia and Kings Canyon. You'll find some of the world's largest trees, of course, as well as a "fantastic backcountry" that makes bear-spotting a routine occurrence. For hiking, one reader recommends the interior loop through Mist Falls/Rae Lakes/Bubbs Creek. The cross-country options are great, as well.
8. (tie) Grand Teton, Wyoming Score: 4.01
How could the spectacular peaks of Grand Teton make for anything but perfect scenery scores? GORP readers agree, giving them a 5.0 (with one reader calling them "simply awesome"). Crowds detracted from the experience, but lodging and a great staff helped boost the score. When do you go to avoid the crowds? According to one reader, October.
9 (tie). Rocky Mountain, Colorado Score: 4.01
Its beauty is undeniable, and Rocky Mountain moved our reviewers to call it "absolutely beautiful and breathtaking." With well maintained trails and endless peaks, it's no surprise that readers call it great for beginner and advanced backpackers alike. But "lines of cars" and crowds that "are getting a bit out of hand" made for decidedly mixed reviews. Get off the beaten pathand stay there!
10. Denali, Alaska Score: 3.98
The scenery in Denali brings words like "awesome" and "magnificent" spilling out of our excited reviewers. No shock. Far from civilization, this park's untamed quality is very appealing. "If you want pure wilderness, this is the place," says one reviewer. The park's lack of facilities contributes to the wilderness feel, but the low infrastructure score (as well as a low score for crowds) brought down its total. Still, all that couldn't keep this Alaskan wunderkind out of the top ten. As one reviewer says, it's "what a national park should be."
