Encampment River Wilderness
Located in the Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming.
Encampment River Wilderness was established in October 1984. It covers approximately 16 square
miles (10,400 acres) of forested land. The average elevation is 7,800 feet. The Encampment River Trail
is in a rugged, narrow canyon. The river varies from narrow, rushing rapids to calm, smooth stretches.
The river is home to brook, brown, and rainbow trout. This is a very scenic hike with old mines and
cabins along the trail. The lower 5 miles of the trail are easy hiking. while the remaining 10 miles have
more up and down due to the ruggedness of the canyon.
