Dark Canyon Wilderness

Located in the Manti LaSal National Forest in Utah.

The 45,000-acre Dark Canyon Wilderness is located on the Monticello Ranger District. It is located in the Colorado Plateau Canyon terrain and is characterized by deep sandstone canyons with vertical walls ranging from a few hundred to thousands of feet in height, interspersed with pinyon-juniper benchland. High red-rock canyons dwarf visitors with terraced castle-like walls towering 3,000 feet above the canyon floors Arches, springs, seeps and hanging gardens exist. Life zones range from ponderosa pine and aspen-covered high country to desert vegetation in the bottom of Dark Canyon. Wildlife species are diverse and include mule deer and cougar. The area ranks high in archeological and scenic values.
