John Muir Wilderness
Located in the Inyo and Sierra National Forests in California.
The 581,000 acre John Muir Wilderness is the largest wilderness in California. It is named after the
prominent naturalist and environmentalist. The wilderness is located in prime central Sierra Nevada, and
it is the most visited wilderness in the state The wilderness is characterized by snow-capped mountains,
hundreds of alpine lakes and streams. Elevations within the wilderness range from 4,000 feet to more
than 14,000 feet. The John Muir and Pacific Crest Trails traverse the area.. Summer thunderstorms are
common and it may snow at any time. Firewood is scarce above 9,000 feet. Stock feed is limited.
Permits to visit the area are required. Quotas are in effect for the entire Sierra National Forest portion
from the last Friday in June through September 15th. Quotas are also in effect for trails into Sequoia-
Kings Canyon National Parks and for overnight travel on the east side trails on the Inyo National Forest
from the last Friday in June through September 15th. Reservations are advised.
