Targhee National Forest - Hiking
Hiking

With more than 1,200 miles of trails, outdoor enthusiasts would be hard-pressed to exhaust the possibilities for great hiking on the Targhee. Targhee's trails are open to backpackers and horse travel. Mountain bicycles are allowed on trails except in the Wilderness Areas. Motorized off-road vehicles are allowed on specified trails as indicated on District Travel Plan Maps available free from any Targhee Forest office.

Ninety-eight miles of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail traverse Targhee National Forest, from the western boundary of Yellowstone Park to Beaverhead National Forest. Much of the trail passes through high alpine backcountry, and rangers warn hikers that the eastern half of the trail runs through grizzly bear country. All grizzly bear guidelines should be used. The western half of the trail crosses high alpine grassy areas, and is not well marked. Hikers should be sure to carry maps of the trail, and take care not to stray from the Divide.

Remember — not all trails are maintained every year. And when traveling in large groups (15 or more), obtain a free group permit in advance.
