Scenic Driving

The Yuba Donner Scenic Byway offers a richly historic glimpse at the most most important Sierra mountain pass. It passes several interesting small towns and three state parks.

The Henness Pass Road from Highway 49 through the Forest until it meets Highway 89 north of Truckee is a nice all day trip. The road passes by Jackson Meadow Reservoir, Milton Reservoir, and Webber Lake. In the spring you will find some wonderful spots for wildflower viewing. The section of the road from Highway 49 to Jackson Meadow Reservoir is a dirt road that is rough in places. However it is passable by two wheel drive.

Drive Gold Lake Road past the spectacular Sierra Buttes to the interesting community of Graeagle. Starting at Highway 49 east of Sierra City, the drive takes about 1/2 hour to reach Graeagle.

Drive from Nevada City to Highway 89 past the picturesque towns of Downieville and Sierra City. The road follows the North Yuba River with many locations for a picnic or camping. Beautiful colors can be seen along this route in the fall.

If you are in the mood for an all-day drive and rougher roads, try the Bowman Road, past Jackson Creek Campground and on to the Jackson Meadow Reservoir. Visit Austin Meadow on the way for wildflower scenes. Return to town via the Henness Pass Road, Highway 89, and I-80. Bowman Road is passable by 2 wheel cars with good clearance. Trailers are not recommended.
