Great Snowshoe Hikes in North Tahoe
Castle Peak
The first two and a quarter miles to Castle Pass as described in the Peter Grubb Hut route are relatively mild, gaining only 725 vertical feet. However, the climb from the pass to the summit is an entirely different story, gaining 1,200 feet in a mere one mile.
The effort is well rewarded by stunning views of the north Lake Tahoe countryside. Although it's not as popular as the route into Peter Grubb Hut, a few hearty ski-mountaineers do attempt the trip to the summit.

How to Get There
Follow directions for Peter Grubb Hut.
Description
Follow the route to Peter Grubb Hut for two and a quarter miles to Castle Pass. From the pass head moderately steeply up the west ridge of Castle Peak. Higher up the ridge, bear slightly north of the ridge line and follow the less precipitous slopes toward the summit. Nearing the top, turn southeast to the true summit at 9,103 feet. Some parties may feel more comfortable ascending the final pitch sans snowshoes.
From the top of Castle Peak you have extraordinary views of the Donner Summit region as well as north to Sierra Buttes and south to the peaks of Desolation Wilderness.
When you have had your fill of the spectacular scenery, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
Come in from the Cold
For respite from the cold, see Loch Leven Lakes.
| FYI: If you prefer not to retrace your steps, with a little navigation it is possible to descend the southeast ridge of Castle Peak and loop around back to the trailhead. |
