Waterfall drama and old-growth, easily attained.

This is a very easy and very pretty trail down a ravine framed with old-growth to an impressive waterfall.

Getting There

In the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. From Trout Lake, follow Highway 141 north through town (coming into Trout Lake from the south, Highway 141 is the left fork of the Y as you enter town).

Pass the ranger station (0.9 mile from the Y), and continue to the junction of Road 88 (1.7 miles from the Y). Turn right on Road 88 and travel 13.0 miles to aptly named Big Tire Junction. Turn right at the big tire, following the sign to Langfield Falls. A signed parking lot on your right about 200 feet from the turn has room for about 10 cars.

The Hike

From the trailhead sign,"Langfield Fall Trail," descend on a wide, needle-carpeted path through a cool, shady, forested draw. The sound of rushing water meets you almost immediately; after just a few hundred feet, you can begin to see the falls on your right. The path continues along the rim of the gorge, then turns into an observation area. A plaque here commemorates K. C. Langfield, Mount Adams Ranger from 1933 to 1956. Benches here offer a chance to sit and view the wide, sprawling falls as they cascade dramatically over an ancient lava cliff.

While this marked observation area is the best photographic vantage point, most will want to continue another 200 feet down the hill to another bench, and even a few dozen feet beyond, where the path peters out at the spray-flecked edge of the falls' pond.
