GORP Family Expert Alice Cary has literally written the book on adventuring in the outdoors with a family. Here, GORP brings you a taste of the real deal.

Here's the most important piece of camping advice I can give you. Arrive at your campsite early so you'll have plenty of time to set up, get settled, and enjoy yourselves. If you don't, you might as well stay home or check into a Holiday Inn.

Relaxing at the Campsite
Don't forget quality time at the campsite

A common mistake is to spend much of the day hiking, biking, or canoeing, trying to cram as much as possible into 24 hours. You may be having such a good time that nobody wants to stop. But you're likely to pay later, with hungry, tired children, approaching darkness, and a mad scramble to make camp.

Remember when on a camping trip that being at your campsite is a major focus of the day.

Campsite Diversions
"Our seven-year-old has always been easy at campsites because he finds so much to look at. His favorite camp chores are getting water and collecting sticks for the campfire. He also likes riding his bike and playing at the edge of the water, catching frogs and tadpoles, stuff like that - we always get a site with water frontage for our canoe. We have a ring toss game that has been fun for many years. A favorite activity for both Chris and his five-year old brother is the hammock. Paul strings it up and both Chris and Steven love to swing in it."

Cooking Safety
"Cook on a stove rather than a fire: It's quicker and easier to keep the children away from it. Don't let young kids near fire pits or stoves even when they're cool. It will be years before they can handle"sometimes yes, sometimes no." We were surprised how quickly Beth and Aimee learned to stay away. They repeated "burn" after us and stayed away when they were one and one and a half"
