Will It Pedal in Peoria?
Rock Island Trail
This popular multi-purpose trail follows the abandoned Rock Island Railroad line between Alta and Toulon. Spanning 26 miles one-way (52 miles total), this crushed limestone trail is the perfect place to take the family for an easy weekend ride. The tree-lined trail makes its way through farmlands, prairie grass, and wildflowers. The best spot to see the prairie as it was years ago is between the Peoria and Stark county lines. You'll also ride over a couple of nice bridges, the most interesting being a trestle bridge crossing the Spoon River between Wyoming and Toulon. Make sure you stop for refreshments in the five towns through which the trail passes: Alta, Dunlap, Princeville, Wyoming, and Toulon. After all, you won't want to rush this ride.
Finding the trail: In Peoria, Interstate 74 hooks up with IL 88. Take IL 88 north, and go 5 miles from the edge of the city limits to Alta Road. Go west on Alta Road less than a mile; when you get into the town of Alta, follow the signs to the trail. From the parking area, you'll see the trailhead.
Contact Rock Island Trail State Park for additional information, including alternative places to pick up the trail.
Notes on the trail: The trail is easy to follow. When you pass through the towns, directional signs will point the way along streets and sidewalks.
