On the Trail of the Pony Express
National Pony Express Association
Established in 1978, the National Pony Express Association is a nonprofit group of more than seven hundred members, organized into divisions for each of the eight states the Pony Express Trail crosses. It is dedicated to creating a deeper appreciation of the historic Pony Express.
The association is perhaps best known for its annual re-ride, when members dress in historic garb and furnish their own horses to ride once again a segment of the historic trail. In addition its members sponsor school essay contests and take part in patriotic parades within the states where the historic trail lies.
The association also carries commemorative mail to communities holding celebrations and raises funds through the delivery of Christmas cards by Pony Express. In 1983 it stepped in when a mud slide near Lake Tahoe interrupted normal postal service. Saddling up to meet the emergency, its members carried the mail cross-country around the slide area. The number of letters delivered increased during the two months of horseback delivery from some four hundred daily to three thousand.
