Fallen Oak Primitive Campground

The name is a clue that these campsites are at the edge of an old oak hammock. One of the biggest oaks has fallen over, providing food and cover for lots of small critters. The approximately six-mile loop trail these campsites are located on is part of a 13-mile stretch of the Florida National Scenic Trail that runs through the state park. Be forewarned that the trail may be very muddy during the June to September rainy season; check with park rangers ahead of time. This campsite is not too far from the main camp road, but is still far removed from the most-used parts of the park, where you'll find canoeing, fishing, boating, and bicycling opportunities. On cooler weekends, expect to have some company here. If you wind up alone, consider yourself lucky.

How To Get There

From U.S. 27 at Lake Wales, travel about nine miles east on State Road 60. Turn left at Boy Scout Road. In three miles, turn right at Camp Mack Road. The park is five miles ahead in Lake Kissimmee State Park, east of Lake Wales.

Campsites, facilities: Primitive camping areas will accommodate about 12 tenting parties, but you must hike three to 3.5 miles to reach your campsite. A picnic table and campfire area are provided. There is no piped water. No rest rooms or other facilities are available. Children are welcome. Pets, firearms, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: Reservations are recommended. There is a small charge for camping. Major credit cards are accepted. Stays are limited to two weeks.

Contact: Lake Kissimmee State Park, 14248 Camp Mack Road, Lake Wales, FL 33853; (941) 696-1112.
