Indian Mound Canoe Site

If you've read the canoe magazines carefully or looked at the material available on-line, this is likely the campsite you've heard about whenever Wekiwa Springs State Park is mentioned. Indian Mound is on an S-turn on Rock Springs Run on a white-sand beach right by the water. It's on a little raised bank overhung with huge live oaks. Notice that"hill" overgrown with palmettos next door? That's an old Indian midden, or mound, built up by Native Americans who piled their garbage-sort of a prehistoric landfill, but cleaner than today's version. Like the Big Buck site, this is no more than a three-hour paddle, and you'll be running with the current. Here, as at Buffalo Tram, look for deer, river otters, wild turkeys, bobcats, and the secretive black bear.How To Get There
From Orlando, drive north on Interstate 4 to Exit 49. Head west on Highway 434 for about one mile to Wekiwa Springs Road. Turn right and continue 5.5 miles to the campground parking lot. Talk to a ranger to get instructions on finding the site and where to launch a canoe.
Campsites, facilities: About 20 canoeists can sleep at this primitive campsite. There are no facilities, so bring water, food, and all the supplies you will need. Children are allowed. Pets, alcohol, and firearms are prohibited.
Reservations, fees: Reservations are not accepted, and demand is particularly high in late winter, spring, and summer. There are nightly camping fees. Major credit cards are accepted. Stays are limited to a few days.
