HIKING

Take an extended hike into the heart of the Yellowstone wilderness. The Heart Lake Loop is a moderately difficult, 34-mile backpacking trip that is indeed a loop (no annoying vehicle shuttle), and it's great for anglers. Bring your rod.

An equally fantastic backpacking walk through the Tetons is the Teton Crest; a 39-mile jaunt that runs from the park's southern border through the high country of the Tetons, ending at Paintbrush Canyon. Allow at least three days, plus time for lounging among the wildflowers.

Sure, Old Faithful's a must-see, and there are trails you can walk around the gushing geyser, but the surreal appearance of Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces gives you more bang for your footsteps. Surreal in appearance, travertine terraces such as these are not found anywhere else in the park.

Take a hiking climb in Gallatin National Forest. The Garnet Mountain Lookout Trail serves up exactly what it promises: a bird's-eye view of the surrounding area after a moderately difficult four-mile hike.

Take on a National Recreation Trail, the Beartooth Loop, in Shoshone National Forest. This easy, 14.4-mile hike will take you up 1,600 feet into some of Wyoming's most gorgeous countryside.
