Regional Guide: The White Mountains
BIKING
Don't let the beauty of the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) pass you by. Though the road is popular with motorized vehilces, this 38-mile, two-lane scenic byway is best experienced by muscle power at your own pace.
Skiers may dominate the slopes in New Hampshire during the winter months, but come summer mountain bikers rip up the downhill. Take the quad lift chair to the peak at Bretton Woods for some bumpy White Mountain singletrack.
Other than the Appalachian Trail and in Wilderness Areas, mountain biking is generally accepted in White Mountain National Forest. For those of you just getting started in this fine pursuit, try Beebe River Road in the Pemigewasset Ranger District. Once you get the swing of it, more challenging trails are just around the next turn.
For a leisurely, half-day road biking loop around the Whites, try the Cherry Mountain Ramble. Beginning in Jefferson, this 30-mile ride highlights the Pilot Range and the northern end of the Whites.
Ride through North Country wilderness in Dixville Notch. A 21-mile loop in a secluded area, the challenging climb in Dixville Notch rewards the rider with a high-velocity descent toward an exciting finish.
