HIKING
A leg of the exalted Pacific Crest Trail travels west of Lake Tahoe, creating the spine for interconnected system of trails for day hikes and extended backpacking trips.
Take a ring around the lake on the Tahoe Rim Trail. This 165-mile trail follows the ridgeline of the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are many trailheads so that you can do this trail whole or in pieces.
The Desolation Wilderness is a small wilderness on the western shore of Lake Tahoe. The rocky landscape would seem lunar if not for the many crystalline alpine lakes shining in the wilderness's rocky folds.
Bayview Trail is a strenuous five-miles up the side of Maggies Peak into Desolation Wilderness. The reward: "Magnificent views of the lake," according to GORP-user Angela McCann.
If you're a peak bagger, Ellis Peak packs a terrific bang for the buck. A moderate 2.5 mile climb yields great views of Lake Tahoe and the Granite Chief Wilderness.
