DRIVING

Our favorite lake drive is the north shore along Route 28. This is the road least traveled along the lake. The road tripper is treated to several beaches and a pass through picturesque Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

For a major road, Highway 50, which connects Tahoe Valley, State Line and Zephr Cove before heading into Nevada has a lot going for it, but especially the lookout at Stateline.

Highway 431, which heads up into the mountains from incline Village, is the sort of windy mountain road that thrills and chills. Numerous lookouts along the way give you a chance to stop and admire the views.

Take the Blackwood Canyon Road for 7.5 miles right to the spot where the pavement ends and the gravel begins. You'll be on a ridge with a glory-hallejulah view of the lake. The road turns off of Highway 89 just north of Idlewild.

If you really want some far out views, take Highway 89 to Squaw Valley. At Squaw Valley, take the tram for eye-popping views from 2000 feet in the air.
