Regional Guide: The Smokies
FAMILY
Take a llama trek into Pisgah National Forest. Meander low mountain paths through color-splashed forests.
Take a hike on the kid-friendly Graveyard Fields Trail to pretty Yellowstone Falls, or hit the Skyline Trail to Hickory Nut Falls. When the mercury drops, explore area trails on snowshoes or cross-country skis.
Hit off-road trails on a mountain-bike excursion. Then get on some rock by experiencing a climbing adventure up Looking Glass Rock.
When camping with the kids, space and privacy come up high on the list. So head to Cosby Campground in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where you'll find picnic tables, flush toilets, and plenty of space per site.
Show the kids what life used to be like here: Visit the Mountain Farm Museum (adjacent to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center), a collection of southern Appalachian farm buildings. Explore a chestnut log farmhouse, barn, apple house, springhouse, and blacksmith shop, with live demonstrations along the way.
