Just another collapsed salt dome? Or could it be a meteorite crater? Hike the moderate, one-mile trail to Upheaval Dome in Canyonlands and see for yourself.
In Capitol Reef National Park, you'll find excellent views along the Rim Overlook Trail (4.5 miles round-trip). Peer down on the town of Fruita and the visitor center from 5,320 feet, and take in the Henry Mountains and the Waterpocket Fold as well. With an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet, expect a strenuous climb to the rim.
Hike a classic Capitol Reef slot canyon on the Halls Creek Narrows Trail (22 miles round-trip). Enjoy deep shade and cooling creek water as the trail leads through narrow sandstone walls into the Waterpocket Fold.
