PADDLING

It's hard to do better than the paddling on Lake George, the 32-mile-long body of water that's helped define summer getaways for decades. Take a sea kayak and several days, staying at resorts or camping on some of the 50 state-owned islands.

For something a bit more adventurous, check out the Class V whitewater on the upper section of the Moose River in Old Forge.

Caution is key when paddling on Lake Champlain, but the activity is a treat not to be missed. Take a sea kayak and check out the views from Westport around Split Rock Point to Essex, or the mouth of the Bouquet River.

The amazing chain of lakes that starts in Old Forge makes for as long or short a paddle as you'd like. Load up your canoe and paddle all the way to Raquette Lake; just be prepared for some portaging.

In the southern 'Dacks, Sacandaga Lake is a gorgeous place to put in. Paddle up to Mud Lake, or carry to beautiful Fawn Lake, which is surrounded by state land and has several good campsites.
