BIKING

Eastern North Carolina's coastal plain serves up some beautiful road riding. Try the Cape Fear Run for a taste of rolling hills and leisurely flats. Beginning in the Piedmont section of the state, this ride ends in beautiful Southport, home of the Venus flytrap.

The coast of North Carolina has strict mountain biking regulations, but Croatan National Forest, just south of New Bern, does its best to make up for the lack of action nearby.

For a taste of all the state has to offer, ride the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, also know as NC Biking Route 2. One of the more scenic sections in the eastern portion of the trail extends from Ponzer to Engelhard. Ride around Lake Mattamuskeet and cruise on through the wildlife refuge of the same name.

If you crave flat cycling along gorgeous coastline, look no further than the Port of Call Route. This 300-mile bicycle path (NC Bike Route 3) stretches from the northern border of South Carolina to the southern border of Virginia. A favorite section runs from Mayville to New Bern and includes Croatan National Forest and a Colonial village.

Do some bike-camping at Cedar Point Recreation Area. The Swansboro Bicentennial Loop, a fantastic, 25-mile ride, travels along Croatan National Forest and offers great camping facilities at Cedar Point. Give it a shot!
