PADDLING

Cavort with the seals and eat Maine mussels fresh from the sea along the East Coast's wildest archipelago. This isn't a trip for paddling or camping lightweights, however—it can be foggy, rocky, and rough. The payoff? An honest-to-goodness outdoor adventure.

Do some spectacular sunrise paddling on the river dividing Maine from Canada—the St. Croix. There are no crowds, and the scenery matches what you'll see on the Allagash.

Get on the water in Acadia National Park, where you'll find rugged headlands, powerful tidal action, quiet covers, and secluded islands.

Paddle on relaxing, intimate Upper Hadlock Pond on Mount Desert Island. A mere 35 acres, the water is stocked with brook trout if you feel like trying your luck fishing.

The Eastern Maine Canoe Trail runs from Vanceboro, on the Canadian border, to the Penobscot River, passing through some of Down East Maine's most scenic watery venues. The route isn't technically difficult, but paddlers will definitely be challenged by the wilderness conditions.
