Lake Placid
Situated on its namesake''s lake and surrounded by mountains, Lake Placid is as close as you can get to a big town inside the park boundaries. But even though you''ll find restaurants and shops, you''ll still experience the laid-back, vacation-like atmosphere of the entire park here. Take a walk around the lake or unwind at a lakeside restaurant. For excitement, hit the Olympic center and check out the bobsled, which runs year-round.

Saratoga Springs
Situated at the southeast corner of the park, tiny Saratoga Springs is famous for its mineral spring water and its charming character. Home also to the Saratoga race track, the town is a lovely piece of civilization on the edge of a gorgeous wilderness.

New York''s capital city makes for a big-city basecamp from which to enjoy the southern Adirondacks. While Albany is mostly a government-focused city, you''ll still find plenty to do when you''re not deep in the Adirondack wilderness.

Plattsburgh
Sitting on the edge of Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh gives you the best of two worlds: Enjoy the beaches and lush green of the lake, then dart off and climb the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Close to the Canadian border, it also makes a great basecamp for exploring Montreal.
