WINTER SPORTS

Skiing, of course! The Rockies make downhill into true adventure. And every resort offers a different experience. Winter Park, for example, is oriented toward families (and has an excellent handicapped program), Crested Butte has some great steeps, and Vail, with more than 5,000 acres of skiable terrain, offers something for everyone. Most places open around mid-November and close mid-April; Arapahoe Basin, though, is often open into July!

Strap on the snowshoes and discover the 10th Mountain Division Huts. Of course, you can also ski, hike, or bike between these 24 huts. Make reservations for these and other Colorado hut systems at www.huts.org.

If you've never been cross-country skiing, now's the time! Most resorts areas have Nordic centers on the grounds or nearby. The town of Crested Butte has a great trail system leading right out of town.

Head to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and strap on some snowshoes. Walk out to Devils Lookout, where you'll get stunning winter views of the canyon's jet-black rock juxtaposed against brilliant white snow. Excellent treks can be undertaken along the upper part of the Oak Flat Loop and Rim Rock Trail.

It's boarding with a twist: Ride down the same slopes used to train ski soldiers during World War II. Ski Cooper offers 26 trails and a summit elevation of 11,700 feet.

Other Activities: Biking | Hiking | Driving | Family
