Weekend Backpacker: Pittsburgh
Warrior Trail
By Sandra Downs

More than 5,000 years ago, primitive tribes started wearing down a path from their villages along the Monongahela River to one of their most important sources of supplies—Flint Ridge in Ohio. At Flint Ridge, they would collect stone to carry back into the forest, carving it down into the essential arrowheads used to hunt buffalo and mastodons. The present-day path of the Warrior Trail follows a portion of this ancient highway from the Monongahela River to the Ohio River, dancing across the Mason-Dixon line. The 67-mile trail runs from Greensboro in Greene County, Pennsylvania, to Moundsville, West Virginia.

Getting There

Take I-79 south to Rt. 21; Rt. 21 east to Little Chicago, then south on Rt. 88 to Greensboro.

Practical Information

The trail is blazed with yellow dots. There are three shelters situated along the trail—you'll want to carry a tent and a copy of the guidebook to locate the shelters and water sources.

Guidebook

The Warrior Trail Association publishes The Hiker's Guide to the Warrior Trail, with narrative directions, information on the history and geology of the region, and a full set of topographic maps.
