Mills Mansion
By Claire Pamplin
Mills Mansion and its grounds are part of Mills-Norrie State Park. Until the early part of the 20th century, Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills used their Staatsburg residence primarily in the fall. The family and their guests enjoyed golf, tennis, horseback riding, yachting, ice skating, and ice boating on estate grounds. The 65-room mansion was the scene for numerous house parties, balls, and dinners.
Today's visitors can also golf, fish, and ride in the adjacent park. Hiking and biking in warm weather and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter are good bets. There's even a sledding hill on the grounds of the Mills estate.
The mansion is a New York State Historic Site, a Beaux Arts masterpiece, and is being restored to its turn-of-the-century splendor. Tours of the mansion are offered from mid-April through October, with special programs and hours at Christmas. Be sure to call ahead for its schedule.
