Kayak Abel Tasman's Coasts
By Judy Armstrong

Abel Tasman National Park, on the South Island's northern coast, is home to New Zealand's most popular and easiest multiday walk. In the summer, the track and huts seethe with people. To see the area without the crowds, hop into a kayak and head for the islands, lagoons, secret beaches and hidden coves that walkers simply can't reach.

Seals and dolphins will keep you company on the water, with indigenous birds tagging along on land. To take a break from kayaking, pull on your boots and walk through the native bush—the Abel Tasman track is well marked.

Head to the park from Motueka, where you can rent a canoe or join a guided group. Beautiful campsites, rare birds, and history are all on the adventurous sea kayaker's menu.
