Mountain Climb
in Baja

By Ron Mader

Visit Mexico
Let's face it: Most of Baja is as flat as a pancake. But you can find some great mountains out on the peninsula, featuring steep cliffs, waterfalls, and Indian petroglyphs. Climb to the the top of 10,000-foot Picacho del Diablo (Devil's Peak) and you can spot mainland Sonora. While the peak remains a challenge to ascend, the Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park that surrounds it is fairly accessible and has primitive campsites.

The entrance is 62 miles from Highway 1. There's a great camping area, along with some good hikes and rock climbing, including the Class III-IV ascent up Devil's Peak. Trails are not always well marked, so bring along topographical maps and a compass. While the park is easy to get to most of the year, the road can be closed by snow in the winter.
