Tierra del Fuego

By Wayne Bernhardson

In his autobiography, pioneer settler Lucas Bridges labeled the island of Tierra del Fuego the"Uttermost Part of the Earth" for its splendid isolation at the southern tip of the continent. Boat rides visit the wildlife sites, and there are hiking trails in the national parks. Fur seals, sea lions, and penguins cavort in the choppy waters of the Magellan Strait, a place where Darwin sailed on the Beagle, and the forty-niners made their way to California. From the seashore, behind the city of Ushuaia, glacial horns rise like sacred steeples nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. The southern beech forests of Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, west of the city, are the terminus of the southernmost highway in the world.
