South Fork

This is a popular day float through a basalt canyon with good fishing. Some of this area was damaged by a huge forest fire in 1992. This is an excellent run through a magnificent canyon cut through the prairie. The water is good and the scenery some of the best. The river starts flat and mellow as it flows through a wide desert canyon. After a mile or two, sheer basalt cliffs close in on the banks. Hiking along or out of the canyon would be extremely difficult. The rapids are mostly class II-III wave trains. Both the named rapids are about halfway down the run. Raspberry is a long wave train. The other is a class III rapid called Devils Hole. Devils Hole can be spotted from upstream. Look for a big pool in the river and a tree covered gravel bar on the left. After this the river picks up and is a splashy class II-III ride almost all the way to the take-out.
There are several campsites near the put-in around Anderson Ranch Dam and Pine.
Getting There: From Boise, take I-84 east, get off at Blacks Creek Road Exit at mile 64. Follow the road to the north over the Danskin Mountains. Continue to the take-out 19 miles from here. The put-in is 21 miles up the dirt road from here.
