Escape to Cabbage Key
By John Robson

A 100-acre speck off Florida's southwest coast, Cabbage Key is the perfect spot to do what Floridians are best known for: relaxing. But that's far from the only thing to do. Nature lovers can wander nature trails, bird watch, shell, fish, paddle, or swim. Bunk down at the Cabbage Key Inn (the former 1930s retreat of mystery novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart) and escape on the trails, paddle a sea kayak looking for manatees, or explore the Indian Mound. Once the weekend day-trippers leave, you'll have the island to yourself, making conditions perfect for lolling about aimlessly on the beach.
