St. Johns River

Access is available - seven miles south of Jacksonville on SR 13, then west on Mills Creek Road approximately one mile. The St. Johns River is renowned for excellent largemouth bees fishing. The best baits are purple, blue, black and green plastic worms fished near underwater eel grass beds. Topwater lures fished near shoreline stumps can be very productive. Bluegill fishing is excellent. The best areas in the river include underwater eel grass beds and submerged pilings. The best baits are live worms, crickets and shrimp fished on the bottom.

Hanna Park

(40 acres) A fish management area which has a small entrance fee. Entrance to this park also provides access to a campground and the Atlantic beach. Hanna Park has good bass fishing, especially around the small islands in the lake. The best baits are crank baits, purple, black and blue plastic worms. February, March and April are the best times to go after trophy fish.

Bluegill fishing is fair with most fish in the seven-inch size class. The favorite baits are crickets and live worms fished on the bottom. The peak season for bluegills is May, June and July. Sunshine bass are also available to the angler with most fish caught while fishing on the bottom with dead shrimp.

Pope Duval, St. Augustine Road Ponds, Bethesda Pond, Lee Adams and Oceanway Fish Management Areas

10- to 20-acre ponds are located throughout the Jacksonville urban area and provide good fishing for abundant bluegill and channel catfish. There are some restrictions on largemouth bass harvest.
