Who Wants to Be a Travel Writer?
The Nitty Gritty
By GORP Travel Expert Rob Sangster

Of the zillion or so people who travel, a considerable number return home eager to create in words the wonders they experienced. Perhaps because of this fierce competition to be published in limited outlets, pay is ludicrously low. Newspapers are the most miserly (e.g., $100 to $300 for a feature piece). Magazines pay better but the writer who doesn't secure an assignment in advance is probably whistling in the wind.

Another path leads to a job as a full-time writer/editor employed by a company that produces travel-related publications. This category includes guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, South American Handbook, or the Unofficial Guide series. You might even try for a job at the leading"outdoors" Web sites.

Assuming one or more of these paths is attractive to you, I'll offer a few practical tips.
