Who Wants to Be a Travel Writer?
What It Takes
By GORP Travel Expert Rob Sangster
Since Amelia is one of several people who've asked me that question
recently, it's time to respond.
My answer is that if you love travel, learn the craft of writing, study
the markets, work hard, and encounter some good luck, you have a reasonable
chance of success. And what a great way to combine vocation and avocation.
Now let's be specific. The word"career" implies making a living. The sad
fact is that very few writers accomplish that goal. Authors of good cookbooks
and romance novels may, but few travel writers do. Consider paying your bills
as a computer consultant, plumber, or using whatever other marketable skills
you have.
From that base of security, earn extra income by writing about your
adventures. Keep in mind that, unlike someone writing a movie review, the
travel writer must pay the considerable expense of the trip. Until you have a
solid reputation, few publishers will pay those expenses, let alone make an
advance.
