Backpacking Henry W. Coe State Park
A mere 13 miles off 101 in San Jose, Henry Coe is a convenient and little-known oasis. Its senic vistas and abundant wildlife make it an ideal—if steep—South Bay destination.

Overnight Hike on Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail - For its range of scenery and low degree of difficulty, the Skyline-to-Sea trail makes for a relaxing trip. Traversing both Big Basin and Castle Rock State Parks, the 35-mile trail is also a birdwatchers' paradise.

Camping Butano State Park
Nestled in the redwoods south of the city, this lush redwood rainforest lives up to its Native American name, which means,"a gathering place for friendly visits."

Walking the Mine Hill Trail - The Native Ohlone people used to follow this trail to the New Almaden Mine area to gather cinnabar, which was traded throughout the state for use as a pigment.

GORP Guide: Point Reyes National Seashore - Point Reyes is a place for romantic memories—just rugged enough to be dramatic and just far enough from the city to be otherworldly. And just close enough to be an easy, enjoyable drive. I know several people for whom this is their favorite place on earth. And Point Reyes is a place you can approach on your terms, whether it's hiking, biking, paddling, or driving (or any combination thereof).

GORP Guide: Mendocino National Forest

The Bay Area Ridge Trail provides recreational opportunities for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians on a network of paths that traverses a broad corridor along the ridgelands.
