It's true: Adventure probably isn't the first thing to spring to mind when you think Caribbean. You likely dream of a postcard-perfect tropical wonderland, with peaceful aquamarine waters and powdery white sand shaded by towering palm trees. And the countless islands that make up this part of the world certainly deliver on the dream, allowing you to kick back and recharge your batteries. In the Caribbean, after all, beachtime is primetime.
But to neglect the wealth of outdoor adventures is to miss out on incredible opportunity. Away from the beaches and lookalike resorts, you can discover everything you could want from an active getaway. The islands range from flat coral isles to mountainous volcanic outcroppings; make your way to the island interiors and you'll find deep tropical rainforests, rock that makes for hardcore climbing, and colorful underwater marine life.
And each island offers something different: Some are large and span hundreds of miles; others can be covered in an afternoon bicycle excursion. Culturally, these islands vary from French to Dutch to English; language and currency differ as well. Political structures range from crown colonies to independent nations. And when you get out of the tourist zones, where cruise-ship masses alight for a few hours, these islands are as different as the seashells found along their beaches.
So grab your hiking gear and head to the mountains, pull on a slicker and check out a rainforest, or squeeze into a wetsuit and take to the deep. The Caribbean is filled with varied experiences both on and off land. No matter how many times you get your passport stamped in these islands, you'll find yourself with a full menu of travel experiences.
