Carriacou's Best: Sandy Island

Located just 15 miles north of Grenada, Carriacou is said to be named after the Carib word for "isle of many reefs." Snorkelers can explore extensive coral beds right from the beach, but you'll find the best stuff around Sandy Island, a five-minute boat ride from the mainland.

Come on in, the water's fine

Another aptly named isle, this tiny strip of sand is surrounded by living reef from waist-deep water out to 10 feet. Snorkelers may run into brilliant orange and purple fairy basslets, stoplight parrotfish, surgeonfish, queen triggerfish, and schools of squid. Green and hawksbill turtles also frequent the area, as well as barracuda and lobsters.

Grenada's Best: Moliniere Point

Anyone can round up fins, a mask, and a snorkel to explore their local stretch of water, and some of the most convenient snorkeling is found in the calm, clear, blue-green Caribbean water just south of Grand Anse beach. Why bother taking a boat to Moliniere Point, 12 minutes off the Caribbean coast? You'll get to explore a living coral reef that comes to within six feet of the surface, with an assortment of brilliantly colored tropical fish swimming beside you.
