Point-au-Pere Lighthouse National Historic Site
In a land so dependent on the sea, it is not surprising to find a lighthouse, that dearest of beacons to mariners everywhere. Visitors can take the 128-step route to the top of Point-au-Pere Lighthouse and lookout over the sea. An adjacent foghorn building and museum are open and showcase navigational aids used on the St. Lawrence. There are also displays relating the tragic demise of the Empress of Ireland and its 1,012 passengers on May 29, 1914.
Location: 300 miles from Gaspi, along Highway 132 on the south shore of the Gaspi Peninsula.
The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site
In May 1760, a small fleet of ships sent by France to aid its colony in North America waited for orders from the governor of New France. Huddled in the harbor of Chaleurs Bay, the fleet was attacked by British ships and was forced to defend itself. The British forces proved too much and defeated the French in the last naval battle between the two over the rights to New France.
Today, the battle site is encapsulated at the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site. Here, the visitor can view a variety of artifacts from the reign of Louis XV, King of France. These objects were discovered during archaeological excavations of the French frigate Le Machault, which sunk during the battle and is now displayed in surroundings corresponding with the decor of the time.
Location: 200 miles from Gaspi, along Highway 132 on the south shore of the Gaspi Peninsula.
