Californians, of course, take their adventures seriously and are well known for having pushed many a limit. But keep in mind that this western state also boasts its share of laid-back residents who are just as happy hanging out on the beach as hanging ten on their surfboards. And it's exactly this combination of tranquility and ambition that makes the outdoor ethos of Northern California so appealing. Luxuriate or put yourself to the test: In either case, you'll fit right in.
And what an environment in which to play. In the far north you'll find lush forests, a steep coastal range, and desolate beaches. As you move south, the Sierras begin to rise, leading eventually to the immaculate granite faces and slopes of Yosemite and Kings Canyon. In the coastal region around the Bay Area lie grassy fields, dry during summer and brilliant during spring, as well as precipitous cliffs plunging down to extraordinary beaches. Unless your sole aim is to ski, the best time to come is April through October, when the weather is ideal for exertion. And whatever you choose to do, don't make your itinerary too tightthere are a million tangents to tempt you.
