Tomales Bay

By Michael Holden

Imagine moonlight dancing over black glassy waters as you paddle swiftly, almost silently, across a coastal bay, the silhouettes of desolate grassy hills surrounding you. You discover beaches accessible only by boat, with wildlife teeming above and below. Welcome to Tomales Bay.

Tomales: The largest
protected bay in California

Situated just north of the Point Reyes Peninsula, the bay is ideally sheltered from the tumultuous waters of the coast—perfect for explorers of all ages and temperaments. Sea creatures and birds are abundant, and you'll find gaggles of harbor seals, flocks of rare ducks, and huge schools of fish. Observe it all from remote beaches, quiet lagoons, or forested hillsides. You can rent a kayak for the afternoon, sign up for a weekend trip, or stash some camping equipment inside your boat and strike out on your own for a few days.
