It is a magical place where ancient rainforests spill down to meet the sea and the corals of the Great Barrier Reef; where rich tropical plants tumble over each other and crowd along the banks of fast-flowing rivers, deep gorges and waterfalls. Flitting through the vegetation are hundreds of butterflies, some so big and brilliant that they compete with the birds for attention. Frogs, bats, snakes, and many other creatures are part of this vibrant forest.
Culturally the area contains the only recognized records of the existence of Australian Aboriginal rainforest inhabitants. The oral pre-history of this surviving rainforest culture is the oldest known for any non-literate indigenous people in the world.
Guided walks are recommended; there is a wide range to choose from both during the day and night. (Spotting nocturnal animals is a wonderful experience in Australia.) Picnic areas and wilderness accommodation allow visitors to immerse themselves in the lush, natural forest.
