Trekking route into mountains
Trekking routes are local
"foot highways"
The footpaths of Nepal's trekking routes were not built for hiking, but rather, for transportation. Nepal has so few roads that many of the villagers you will meet have never seen an automobile. Instead, people travel by foot, and you'll share paths with locals traveling from one village to the next, sometimes carrying on their backs gargantuan packs of goods they hope to sell including cases of soft drinks and beer.

Because walking is the main mode of transportation in rural Nepal, there are plenty of places to hike, whether for a day, a week, or a month. The main trekking routes have certain advantages for first-time travelers: they are fairly well marked, facilities for eating and sleeping are spaced along them at intervals of a day's walk or less, and many of the locals speak at least a little English. On lesser known routes, you are often required to take a guide, and you may need porters as well because the lack of facilities can oblige you to carry all your own food and gear.

The following treks are Nepal's most popular.
