The tourist's Hong Kong includes Victoria Island and Kowloon, but the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region encompasses territory more suitable for the adventure traveler. Get outside city boundaries and you'll find some 260 serene (and largely uninhabited) islands. The best way to explore Hong Kong's lesser-known treasures is on a Chinese junk. Failing that, hop a ferry at the outlying island ferry pier in Hong Kong's Central district and head to the Tai O Trail on the island of Lantau, just west of Hong Kong.
Hike the area's rugged uplands on the 8.5-mile trail from from Tai O to the Shek Pik reservoir and you'll pass a dozen pirate coves and the ruins of two Ching Dynasty forts.
