Trek Up
Mount Meru

By Hugh Finlay

Visit Africa

Although almost literally overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, rugged Mount Meru offers similar alpine trekking. It's possible to get to the peak (13,700 feet), and chances are you'll have the place to yourself. You could do this trek independently, but you must take a national park guide (US $15 per day, available at the park gate). The trek (allow a minimum of four days) goes from 4,500 to over 13,500 feet and takes you through a variety of vegetation zones rich in bird and animal life. Highlights are the spectacular crater at the peak and majestic, sweeping views.
