Machame Route

MACHAME ROUTE This is probably the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. With a lovely gradual ascent through forest you emerge to see wide views of the moorland on Shira Plateau, Kibo and the Western Breach. Beautiful vegetation enhances the scenery along this route.

Directions

Follow the road to Machame village, west, then north from Moshi. Leave your car at the hotel or school and continue up the road about 1 km to the village green, a large triangular patch of grass. Cross over to follow the track another 3 kms through coffee farms and forest to the Park gate. A clear track continues up through plantation and natural forest to the ridge between the Weru Stream and the Makoa Stream until the trailhead is reached.

From here a narrow forest path continues to Machame Huts. To reach upper route and huts, you cross the valley at Machame Huts and continue up the steep ridge. At 3-4 hours the trail goes west into a gorge and ascends to Shira Hut on the Shira Plateau. From Shira Hut you can then go on to the Barranco Hut (5-6 hrs), Moir Hut (2 hrs) or Lava Tower Hut (4 hrs).

Distances

Machame village to Park gate: 2 hrs
Park gate to trailhead: 2 hrs
Trailhead to Machame Huts: 4-5 hrs
Machame Huts to Shira Hut 5 hrs

Huts

Machame Huts - 3000 m. These are 2 unfurnished uniports, which each sleep 6. Water can be found in a stream about 5 minutes down valley below the huts and there; platform toilets. Shira and other upper huts.
