Tiger Fishing at Lake Kariba
By Rupert Isaacson

Visit Africa
Every year game fishermen from all over the world converge of Lake Kariba—a Zambezi reservoir the size of an inland sea—to hunt the elusive, hard-fighting tiger fish, which can grow to more than 30 pounds. Although almost all of the game lodges in the Kariba area are built around tiger fishing, none offers the expertise of the Tiger Bay Resort, which exists for this purpose alone. A serious sport fisher's paradise, its guides know all the best lies and lures (mostly spoons and spinners—you don't use flies for this aggressive game fish). And it's not just the fishing that's great: Kariba is African wilderness on a grand scale. Its many islands all harbor big game. As you cast and troll from your boat, you may see lions swimming between headlands, bull elephants fighting in the water, or vast buffalo herds grazing the green grass of the shoreline. The best time to go is September, when the water is at its cleanest and the lake hosts an international fishing competition.
