Gilbert Preston, MD
Gilbert Preston, M.D.
Gilbert Preston, M.D., has a passion for the outdoors and a profound commitment to the medical profession. He has practiced primary care medicine in rural Montana for over 20 years, and when not working he explores wilderness areas throughout the northwest (Montana's Absaroka-Beartooth is a favorite), climbs peaks (he summited Mount Rainier last spring), and travels to remote corners of the globe.

Dr. Preston has combined his two principal interests in a comprehensive book, Wilderness First Aid. This pocket-sized manual offers straightforward advice for evaluating medical emergencies in the backcountry and treating them with limited resources and no professional assistance. It's a must-have addition to any complete field first aid kit.

A former research associate at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Preston is a member of the Wilderness Medical Society and is on the staff of Saint James Community Hospital in Butte, Montana. He has published more than 200 medical articles in Pacific Northwest newspapers and magazines, and he is the founder and medical director of Wilderness Medical Systems in Butte— a company that designs customized medical kits for expeditions and outdoor enthusiasts.
