Richard Penny
Richard Penny first became interested in America's wilderness resources at summer camp in the Appalachian mountains. There he annually devoted a good bit of effort to destroying aluminum Grumman canoes on the rivers of North Carolina. But by 1975 he had his own kayak, a pair of boots, and a backpack, and he's been exploring the creeks, rivers, and mountains of the South and West ever since.

In 1986, Richard wrote first edition of The Whitewater Sourcebook for Menasha Ridge Press, a guide to the nation's rivers for both paddlers and conservationists. The Whitewater Sourcebook is now in its third edition. Having trained as a biologist (Ph.D., Duke, 1983), Richard became increasingly involved in river protection and restoration. He has been a long-time volunteer leader with the Sierra Club and American Whitewater. In 1997 he joined the board of directors for the latter organization.

Richard became the campaign coordinator for the American River Coalition in 1996 and directed the successful fight in Congress to stop construction of the infamous Auburn dam on the American River in California. He is now the development director for Friends of the River, California's statewide river conservation group.

Richard lives in Davis, California with his wife, Anne, and daughters, Meredith and Alison. In addition to kayaking, he also enjoys whitewater rafting with his family. He serves as a volunteer guide for Friends of the River's rafting chapter.

Richard was a GORP guest while we featured an excerpt from The Whitewater Sourcebook on our home page.
