 Dr. David E. Johnson |
While most of us know to pack the 10 essentials before heading into the woods, up the mountain, or down the river, not every outdoor enthusiast has the necessary health, safety, and first-aid skills under his or her hip belt. If you have questions about outdoor medicine and rescue know-how, GORP Guest David E. Johnson, M.D., may have your answers. An emergency physician with more than 20 years' experience, Dr. Johnson taught wilderness medicine and high-angle rescue to the Bolivian Army. He served as a ship's physician aboard a schooner that sailed from New York, New York, to St. Petersburg, Russia, with the Sail for Peace and Environment Program.
Dr. Johnson is president and medical director of Wilderness Medical Associates (www.wildmed.com; 1-888-WILDMED), one of the foremost providers of emergency wilderness training in the world. With over 100 faculty members, WMA teaches courses to both backcountry enthusiasts and professionals around the globe. Dr. Johnson has been with WMA since its beginning in 1978 and purchased the company in 1997.
Dr. Johnson continues to teach wilderness medical programs as his practice allows, and both writes and lectures on the subject. An avid outdoorsman, he rock climbs, sea kayaks, and sails.
