Gordon Hempton
360º Panoramas of Olympic National Park

Through his One Square Inch of Silence campaign, acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton is seeking to restore quiet to our parks.

Although Hempton wants us all to experience the thrill of being enveloped by pure, natural sound, he also realizes the importance of that other sense: sight.

Click on the links below for breathtaking, virtual reality photographs of Olympic National Park. Each picture can be viewed in stunning, 360º panorama by moving your mouse.

You must have Quicktime 4 view the panoramas.

Hoh Rainforest
Hempton calls this UNESCO world heritage site"one of the last great places of America."

Hole in the Wall
A stretch of gentle tide pools just north of Rialto Beach.

Rialto Beach
An unprotected"musical instrument," this beach is Hempton's favorite place to listen. No two of his more than 500 Rialto recordings sound the same.

Obstruction Point
A place of alpine silence where the snow melts into music.

Marymere Falls
One of Hempton's favorite open-air classrooms when teaching at the Olympic Park Institute.

Ozette Lake
A remote lake that's home to eagles and loons, whose haunting cry Hempton calls a"wilderness soundmark."
